Independence Place will provide 11 one and two bedroom units for people with physical
disabilities in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. All units will be
affordable as well as wheel chair accessible. A person does not need
to be in a wheel chair to apply but must have a disability that would
require them to live in a housing unit that is accessible. ( i.e.:
arthritis, MS, etc)
The affordability criteria as
defined by PEIHC states that an individual cannot have an annual
income that exceeds $15,944. A couple cannot have an annual income
that exceeds $31,887. A one bedroom unit (approximately 650
square feet) shall rent for $500. a month including heat with the
tenant paying their own electricity. A two bedroom unit cannot be
rented to one person only. A two bedroom unit (approximately 950
square feet ) must have 2 people in it. A two bedroom unit shall rent
for $650. a month including heat with the tenant paying their own
electricity.
Each of the 11 units will
have its own washer/dryer, dishwasher, fridge and stove. All flooring
will be a combination of laminate and ceramic tile. Some units have
tub units with showers and others have large showers that tenants can
take their wheel chairs into. Please specify on the application form
whether you prefer the tub units with showers or the shower units that
you can take a wheel chair into.
We are using the most
advanced heating and structural technologies available to us,
including geo-thermal heat pumps and insulated concrete forms, to
provide superior housing to the residents of Independence
Place. This project is only possible because of the Canada PEI
Affordable Housing Agreement. It is because of their help that we are
able to make all 11units wheel chair accessible and affordable. We are
very grateful to the Canada PEI Affordable Housing Agreement for
recognizing the huge need in the Summerside market for accessible
housing that is also affordable.

“For most people, a home is
more than a building: it is a state of mind, and expression of
personality, the one place where it is possible simply to be. If a
house is inadequate for the needs of the people living in it, it never
quite becomes a home. For people with disabilities, a dwelling must be
fully accessible to become a home.”
We are very excited about
this project. This project will provide 11 people with not just a
building but a home. This project will help give 11 people some of
their independence back.

starting February 20th to meet with potential clients and show them

Scotcor Construction Ltd. is a small company operated by Scott and Corinna
Costain, a husband and wife team. They started the company in 1995. They employ
seven people year round and sometimes a student in the Summer. They have a very
knowledgeable and friendly staff. Clients continually comment on how efficient

are licensed carpenters that have been with the company for a number of years.
They like to keep a small staff so they have a lot of control over the quality
of their homes. You don’t have to worry that you are going to get the bad crew
or the good crew when you hire Scotcor, their crew is always the same so you

relies almost solely on the referrals from previous clients for their work. They
build eight to nine homes a year paying special attention to the quality and
details of each home. They enjoy building with the latest technology
(geo-thermal heating systems, insulated concrete forms). They are R2000
certified builders who can build and register your home with the R2000 program.

warranty.

have him price their project. Scott prices all of the jobs himself. He presents
his clients with a very detailed contract stating the particulars of his
proposal. Scott is a very professional and knowledgeable builder. He works with
his clients, as much or a little as they wish, to make sure the project is a
success.
As a general contractor, Scott overseas all of the work by staff and sub-trades
on his site. Scott uses only the best skilled tradesmen and women. Scott’s
personal pride in producing a quality product with added attention to details is
clearly visible throughout the entire project. He shows a lot of respect for
each project, building each home with as much care as if it was to be his very
own.Corinna is responsible for the office administration of Scotcor
Construction. She handles the company’s finances. She also works with
sub-trades and suppliers to ensure a quality product. Corinna often assists
clients when they are choosing flooring products, cabinets, light fixtures, and
paint colors. The house is wonderful, you guys did a great job!!! You made
the whole experience seem effortless and stress free (which isn’t easy with a
